Subject: Is the iPhone 5 Worth Cutting Off Your Penis?
To: "rachel@rachel-king.net" <rachel@rachel-king.net>

Hey, XXXXXX

Now that we know all the features, what would you do for the iPhone 5? According to a recent survey of 2,011 American males ages 18-30, 39% would be willing to give up one inch of penis size to be the first in line for the device.

Also, leading coupon site CouponCodes4u's survey found that 61% would give up sex for 6 months to be the first in line to receive the new iPhone. But, realistically, how many of these guys would actually be getting any in the next six months anyway?

Any interest in seeing the full results of the survey? It contains other funny, surprising and interesting facts that would make a great iPhone story.

Let me know, and I'd be happy to send along!

Thanks

Subject: Conversation between two American ladies at LAX (Los Angeles International Airport)

Two informally dressed ladies happened to start up a conversation during a seemingly endless wait in the LAX airport.

The first lady was an arrogant California woman married to a wealthy man.

The second was a well-mannered elderly woman from the South.

When the conversation centered on whether they had any children, the California woman started by saying, "When my first child was born, my husband built a beautiful mansion for me."

The lady from the South commented, "Well, bless your heart."

The first woman continued, "When my second child was born, my husband bought me a beautiful Mercedes-Benz..

Again, the lady from the South commented, "Well, bless your heart."

The first woman continued boasting, "Then, when my third child was born, my husband bought me this exquisite diamond bracelet.

Yet again, the Southern lady commented, "Well, bless your heart."

The first woman then asked her companion, "What did your husband buy for you when you had your first child?"

"My husband sent me to charm school," declared the Southern lady.

"Charm school?" the first woman cried, "Oh, my God! What on earth for?"

The Southern lady responded, "Well for example, instead of saying ‘Who gives a shit?’ I learned to say, ‘Well, bless your heart.’"

Fri, 20 May 2011 15:37:30 -0700 Sidney Esikoff, 1919-2011 http://jperlow.posterous.com/sidney-esikoff-1919-2011 http://jperlow.posterous.com/sidney-esikoff-1919-2011

My name is Jason Perlow – I am Sidney Esikoff’s oldest grandchild.

When you’re the first grandchild, you’re often the one to set the ground rules in dealing with your grandparents. After all, you’re the one that has to break them in.

I’m not sure when it happened, but it’s one of my earliest memories. I started calling the man and the leader of my family that we are memorializing today “Popi”.

I guess that somewhere in my two, or three year old brain, that I was able to determine that there was a difference between my Father’s parents from Freida and Sidney Esikioff, who lived nearby in Hollis Hills. I’m not sure why I chose the names “Nana” and “Popi” for Sidney and Frieda, but it stuck.

All of their grandchildren from there on called them that. I set the rules.

I loved both sets of my grandparents very much, but my relationship between the people I called Nana and Popi was unique, and it is one that I will cherish for the rest of my life. It is also a relationship which played a tremendous part in creating the man that I am today.

Not many men or women are lucky enough to have grown up with lasting memories of all four of their grandparents. Twenty-four years ago, in August of 1987,  I stood before many of you on this very podium to memorialize Freida Esikoff, my Nana. I was 18 years old, and I’m pretty sure that I was much more composed delivering her eulogy than I am right now for my grandfather.

As a very young child, Both Nana and Popi spoiled me rotten, much to the resigned disapproval of my parents and without a doubt drove them completely crazy.

Later on, when my grandparents moved from Hollis Hills to their high-rise apartment in Manhattan, it was Nana who doted on and adored me – she brought me on trips to FAO Schwartz, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the MoMA and also to her art gallery where I would run around, cause havoc and get to play with some of the most famous modern artists of the 1970s, even though I had no idea who they were at the time.

Frieda wasn’t a very good cook, and I was told that she almost burned down her house once trying to cook a pot roast. But boy did she know how to spot a good buy on a Picasso, a Dali or a Miro.

She was the one who gave me an appreciation of beautiful things and whose art collection remains her legacy to this very day. I still think about Nana all the time and I know that she would have loved to have seen her Grandchildren grow up, get married, become successful and have children of their own. While I am not a particularly religious person or consider myself spiritual in any way, I know that somewhere out there she and Popi are looking down at all of  six of us in approval, and are very proud.

Still, it was Popi would pick me up on Fridays after school in his big Fleetwood Cadillac – he drove almost exactly the same model for years until they stopped making it, and resigned to drive town cars instead -- and took me to Yankee games, frequently the Playoffs and the World Series with the season tickets that he had for many years.

We’d often listen on the drive from Great Neck to the Bronx to his favorite music – which plays like the soundtrack of a Rat Pack movie. In the car and later on in life we'd sometimes talk about his years during the war, where he was a young Lieutenant in the US Army Corps, playing the role of a whiz kid war statistician and a bomb damage assessment expert flying over Europe on B-17s and B-24 liberators.

I was fascinated with how good he was at dealing with figures, since I was so terrible at math. I thought it would be so much easier to do with a calculator or a computer, but he did everything by hand, and in his head.

At the game he’d let me taste his beer and feed me until I was sick to my stomach with peanuts, popcorn, cracker jack, hot dogs and soft pretzels.

And as if that wasn’t enough, after the game, on the way back to their apartment where I’d stay over for the weekend, and I would often fall asleep on his leather couch watching late night re-runs Star Trek with him in his den, we’d go to Peppermint Park, the famous Manhattan ice cream and candy shop which closed many years ago.

So if you get right to the bottom of it, my appreciation for large, gas guzzling automobiles, big airplanes, the Bronx Bombers, Frank Sinatra, Captain Kirk and all forms of junk food debauchery comes from Sidney Esikoff. I won’t criticize his taste for cheap Canadian whiskey, that damned Crown Royal that I’ve been drinking so much of this week.

But besides the fun and games, I learned very early on in my childhood that Popi was a builder and a serious businessman – he frequently drove me to all the developments that were under construction and showed me all the houses being built.

“You built all these houses Popi?” I once asked. No, he said, but “I’m a general contractor and a developer and I’m in charge of all the guys who do”.

I was in complete awe of him. To me, the man was a giant and could do anything. I wanted to be a businessman, just like him. While I don’t develop commercial or residential real estate for a living his strong work ethic and his perfectionism passed onto me and also on to all of his grandchildren.

I’ll leave you with one last thing that he told me as a little boy that will always stick with me for the rest of my life: “Jason, I don’t care if you become a ditch digger. Just be a very good one.”

Thank you for everything, Popi.  I love you.

Thu, 24 Mar 2011 14:26:31 -0700 RIM to Expand Application Ecosystem, Support Android Apps http://jperlow.posterous.com/rim-to-expand-application-ecosystem-support-a http://jperlow.posterous.com/rim-to-expand-application-ecosystem-support-a

Hello,

We thought you might be interested in this news from RIM that came out late this afternoon:

RIM Expands Application Ecosystem for BlackBerry PlayBook

·         BlackBerry PlayBook to support BlackBerry Java and Android apps

·         Native C/C++ development support added, in addition to HTML5, Flash and AIR support

·         Support from leading game engines: Ideaworks Labs (AirPlay) and Unity Technologies (Unity 3)

·         BlackBerry PlayBook becomes a new market opportunity for all the developers who have already created over 25,000 BlackBerry Java apps and more than 200,000 Android apps

Waterloo, ON - Developers wanting to bring their new and existing apps to the highly anticipated BlackBerry® PlayBook™ tablet will soon have additional tools and options to enhance and expand their commercial opportunities. Research In Motion (RIM) (Nasdaq: RIMM; TSX: RIM) today announced plans to greatly expand the application ecosystem for the BlackBerry PlayBook. The BlackBerry PlayBook is scheduled to launch in the U.S. and Canada on April 19.

RIM will launch two optional “app players” that provide an application run-time environment for BlackBerry Java® apps and Android v2.3 apps. These new app players will allow users to download BlackBerry Java apps and Android apps from BlackBerry App World and run them on their BlackBerry PlayBook.

In addition, RIM will shortly release the native SDK for the BlackBerry PlayBook enabling C/C++ application development on the BlackBerry® Tablet OS. For game-specific developers, RIM is also announcing that it has gained support from two leading game development tooling companies, allowing developers to use the cross-platform game engines from Ideaworks Labs and Unity Technologies to bring their games to the BlackBerry PlayBook.

Support for BlackBerry Java and Android Apps

“The BlackBerry PlayBook is an amazing tablet. The power that we have embedded creates one of the most compelling app experiences available in a mobile computing device today,” said Mike Lazaridis, President and Co-CEO at Research In Motion. “The upcoming addition of BlackBerry Java and Android apps for the BlackBerry PlayBook on BlackBerry App World will provide our users with an even greater choice of apps and will also showcase the versatility of the platform.”

Developers currently building for the BlackBerry or Android platforms will be able to quickly and easily port their apps to run on the BlackBerry Tablet OS thanks to a high degree of API compatibility.  The new optional app players will be available for download from BlackBerry App World and will be placed in a secure “sandbox” on the BlackBerry PlayBook where the BlackBerry Java or Android apps can be run.

Developers will simply repackage, code sign and submit their BlackBerry Java and Android apps to BlackBerry App World. Once approved, the apps will be distributed through BlackBerry App World, providing a new opportunity for many developers to reach BlackBerry PlayBook users.  Users will be able to download both the app players and the BlackBerry Java and Android apps from BlackBerry App World.

The BlackBerry PlayBook and BlackBerry Tablet OS are built on the QNX® Neutrino® microkernel architecture with a 1GHz dual core processor and a leading OpenGL solution, which allows RIM to make this incredibly broad platform support possible.

BlackBerry PlayBook users and developers who are interested in seeing the new app players for BlackBerry Java and Android apps can see demos at BlackBerry World in Orlando, Florida (May 3 to 5, 2011) (www.blackberryworld.com).

BlackBerry Tablet OS Development Tools

The BlackBerry Tablet OS already supports an incredibly robust platform with support for Web development standard HTML5, through the BlackBerry® WebWorks™ SDK for Tablet OS, and Adobe® AIR®, through the BlackBerry Tablet OS SDK for Adobe AIR. The BlackBerry Tablet OS is built from the ground up to run WebKit and Adobe® Flash® as well, giving developers a fast and true Web experience to leverage.

RIM is also announcing today that the BlackBerry Tablet OS Native Development Kit (NDK), which is currently in limited alpha release, will go into open Beta by this summer and be demonstrated at BlackBerry World. The BlackBerry Tablet OS NDK will allow developers to build high-performance, multi-threaded, native C/C++ applications with industry standard GNU toolchains. Developers can create advanced 2D and 3D applications and special effects by leveraging programmable shaders available in hardware-accelerated OpenGL ES 2.0.

Other features of the BlackBerry Tablet OS NDK will allow developers to:

  • Take advantage of the QNX POSIX library support and C/C++ compliance for quick and easy application porting and for creating native extensions for both BlackBerry and Android applications
  • Easily integrate device events like gesture swipes and touch screen inputs
  • Integrate the BlackBerry Tablet OS environment into existing code management and build systems using industry standard Eclipse CDT (C/C++ Development Tools)
  • Leverage work done in standard C/C++ to make it easier to bring applications to the BlackBerry Tablet OS
  • Find and fix bugs quickly with provided debug and analysis tools

“The response to the BlackBerry PlayBook from the developer community has been exceptional. Our commitment to supporting HTML5 and Adobe AIR development has resonated and spurred developers to create fun and innovative applications for BlackBerry PlayBook users,” said David Yach, Chief Technology Officer, Software at Research In Motion. “The upcoming BlackBerry Tablet OS NDK beta will add C/C++ tools to our repertoire and gives developers one of the broadest and deepest platforms to develop on.”

Gaming Engines

Building on the power of the BlackBerry Tablet OS NDK, RIM is working with leading gaming and application development technology providers such as Ideaworks Labs and Unity Technologies to implement their native engines and application development platforms. Developers will be able to take advantage of these engines when building games and other applications for the BlackBerry PlayBook.

The Ideaworks Labs Airplay SDK is expected to include support for the BlackBerry Tablet OS soon, making it easy for publishers and developers to use their existing code to bring their games and apps to the BlackBerry PlayBook.

"Supporting a new OS can be a challenge for developers," says Alex Caccia, President of Ideaworks Labs, "however, integration of the BlackBerry Tablet OS with the Airplay SDK makes this a non-issue. We think this is a far-sighted move by RIM: the BlackBerry PlayBook is a great device for games and applications, and combining this with content distribution via BlackBerry App World brings an exciting new ecosystem for developers."

RIM has also been working closely with Unity Technologies, providers of the highly popular, multi-platform Unity development platform and Union, the firm’s games distribution service.  Through Union, dozens of high-quality Unity-authored games are slated to make their way to BlackBerry App World for the BlackBerry Playbook.

“With a sharp focus on the multimedia experience, very powerful hardware, and fantastic games in the pipeline, the BlackBerry Playbook has all the right ingredients to be a mainstream hit,” said Brett Seyler, GM of Union at Unity Technologies. “Through Union, Unity developers have an opportunity to reach a new audience and grow with another great new platform.”

Availability

The new app players for the BlackBerry PlayBook are expected to be available from BlackBerry App World this summer. More information and demonstrations of the new app players will be shared at BlackBerry World. The BlackBerry Tablet OS NDK will be available in beta later this year and will also be showcased at BlackBerry World.

Wed, 16 Mar 2011 09:46:17 -0700 News re Tabla Space http://jperlow.posterous.com/news-re-tabla-space http://jperlow.posterous.com/news-re-tabla-space

Hello,

We wanted to update you on some news regarding Tabla’s former home on Madison Square Park.  We are pleased to announce that a new restaurant from one of Peru’s most celebrated culinary figures, Gastón Acurio, will be moving into the space.

Ever since we announced Tabla’s closing a few months ago, we have been considering a variety of options to assure a bright future for our former restaurant’s glorious space overlooking Madison Square Park. We ultimately ruled out doing something there ourselves, as we're already conceiving and opening two brand new restaurants this year: Untitled (next week at the Whitney); and North End Grill (opening at the end of 2011 in Battery Park City).

Over the last few months, we have enjoyed getting to know the exceptional team from the restaurant group, La Mar, who fell in love with the space and the Madison Square Park community. Based in Lima, La Mar was founded by Gastón Acurio, who made it his mission to share the joys of Peruvian gastronomy and wave the Peruvian flag throughout the world. He's incredibly excited to be opening in New York.

La Mar owns and operates several successful and critically acclaimed Peruvian cebicherías in South America, México, as well as one in San Francisco.  Their parent company has Peruvian restaurants, under different concepts, in most major cities in South America and Madrid, Spain. La Mar has been searching for the right space in New York for some time, and as soon as they saw the Tabla space, they knew they found the perfect new home for their restaurant.

In addition to being enormously impressed with the individuals behind their company, we were also drawn to their culture of hospitality, culinary excellence and demonstrated commitment to being part of the communities in which they do business. We’re thrilled to welcome the La Mar team to Madison Square Park and believe this new restaurant will be a great boon to the neighborhood. We're confident that La Mar will begin a wonderful next culinary chapter to follow Tabla.

If you have any questions for the La Mar restaurant group, please contact Carissa Remitz at Carissa@wagstaffworldwide.com or 415-274-2510 x15. You can also check out their website www. lamarcebicheria.com. Or of course, let me know if I can be helpful in any way .

Wed, 12 Jan 2011 11:21:31 -0800 Rachel's Mole Chili http://jperlow.posterous.com/rachels-mole-chili http://jperlow.posterous.com/rachels-mole-chili

I was asked via email for my Mole Chili recipe. Jason thought my response was funny and I should post it. So, enjoy. (The friend was on a diet, hence some of the commentary.)

~~~
Recipe? I don't use no stinking recipe! But, I can give you a few recipes and tell you how I made it yesterday.
http://offthebroiler.wordpress.com/2007/10/11/cleveland-indians-chili/
Good chili for topping hot dogs or burgers or as they do in Cincinnati, over spaghetti.
http://offthebroiler.wordpress.com/2008/02/02/tailgate-degustation-menu-2008/
Portobello Mushroom Chili, vegetarian and very diet friendly. Based off a recipe from a diabetes cookbook, but the original portion was tiny, and it was very low in calories, so it's not like it needed to be such a small portion, plus the original recipe had no protein. I use TVP or ground turkey breast when I make this.
OK, so what I did on Monday afternoon. Went shopping for meat, with "ground meat" on my shopping list, thinking Turkey. But, I actually got 4 kinds of meat (7 lbs total). Ground beef, ground pork, ground turkey, and a semi boneless lean chuck steak. In a big pot (I use my 16 qt stock pot) Brown the meats individually, drain the grease into a metal bowl with a metal sieve (plastic might melt). Then RINSE THE still GREASY MEAT with warm water. Put into separate bowl to hold (6 qt pot or big bowl).
The steak, I trimmed the bone and fat and made into small cubes, about 1/2 inch dice or so. That was browned last and held with the rest of the meat.
Now for vegetables. (I say dice below, but I mostly pulse in the food processor) Dice a bunch of onions (1 small bag, what's that? 2 or 3 lbs?) and start sweating (to deglaze the pan), then remove the lid to brown them some more before adding the other veg. About 8 Fresh Anaheim chilis (that's what they had at the Shop Rite), they're kind of medium hot, not too bad at all. If you want a spicier chili, you could use a hotter one, like jalapeño or Korean long hots, but heat can also be adjusted with dried chilies. Dice the chilies along with a red bell pepper (for color and sweetness) and saute that with the onions once they've started browning.
While all that's going on, peel and 1/8th cut some tomatillos. Put a head of garlic cloves (peeled, duh), in the FP. Pulse a few times, then add the tomatillos and pulse chop them too. Not fine. Once the veg are looking good, add the tomatillos and garlic to the big pot.
The tomatillos help start making everything soupy, but you need it to be soupier. I added 3 28 oz cans of tomatoes. A combination of crushed and diced. You want some dice for appearance and texture, but the crushed is a bit thicker and makes the sauce.
As that comes to a boil, you can get the spices together. I had a combination of dried Chipotle and Mulatto ground in my pantry (Kalustians I think), added a couple of tablespoons of that. Some cumin, oregano, garlic powder. I also had bought at the store a package of dried Ancho chilies. Broke them and removed most of the seeds, but not obsessively, so maybe 1/4 of seeds still there. Ground them in FP and added to pot (they smelled kind of raisony, which inspired the thought of turning this into a Mole chili). 1 tsp of salt (doesn't sound like much, but between the canned tomatoes and beans, which are salted, I never added more). Stirred, tasted, thought it needed more, but decided to let it all simmer together first. Oh yeah, a couple teaspoons of cinnamon (since it's Mole).
Add meats to pot. Bring to boil, reduce to bare simmer, cover, let simmer for 1 hour.
Taste, add more seasonings. It's OK if it's aggressively seasoned, because now we add beans. 1 can of beans for each lb of meat, so I added 7 cans of red kidney beans. My intention was to add a equal amount of beans as meat, which would really be 2 cans per pound, because a 15 oz can of beans really only has 8-10 ounces of beans once they are drained and rinsed. But, I didn't think to buy more than a few cans at the store, thinking I had more at home, I did, but not that many. However, when I'm eating the chili I think it has a bit too much beans. But the beans make it healthier, so that's up to you.
So, beans in. Simmer for another hour. Oh, throw in some cilantro at some point towards the end. Taste, maybe it needs more cumin or chile? At the end, add some chocolate. Unsweetened baking chocolate is good. I was about to use my callebaut couverture, but then I realized I had some old Baker's in my cupboard, so I went with that, which is fine for chili. I used 4 squares unsweetened and 2 squares semisweet. I added two at a time and let them sit for a few minutes to melt, then stirred them in and tasted, then added more. :)
I add the chocolate at the end because I wasn't sure if it would be bad to boil the chocolate, and there's PLENTY of heat in the pot to add it at the end. I allowed it to rest for an hour or so before putting into containers to cool outside. It was still burning hot.
Serve with some chopped cilantro on top. Despite all the different chilies in it, it wasn't very hot at all. I'm sure you're kids could handle it. Jason wanted hot sauce. So, I added a couple Chipotle in adobo, with some sauce from a can.
shopping list
7 pounds assorted meat
3 lbs yellow onions
1 lb fresh green medium hot chilies (Anaheim)
1 red bell pepper
2 lbs tomatillos
1 head garlic
3 28 oz cans tomato (1 crushed, 2 diced)
1 bag dried medium hot chile (Ancho)
7 cans red kidney beans
Unsweetened Chocolate
1 can Chipotle in Adobo (you don't use the whole can unless you want a really hot chili)
Fresh Cilantro
Spices
Dried ground chilies (Chipotle especially)
Cumin
Oregano
Cinnamon
Salt
Garlic Powder
OK, I think that's everything. Enjoy. :)
Wed, 26 May 2010 18:19:06 -0700 Sad News from the Baking World http://jperlow.posterous.com/sad-news-from-the-baking-world http://jperlow.posterous.com/sad-news-from-the-baking-world
Please join me in remembering a great icon of the entertainment community.
The Pillsbury Doughboy died yesterday of a yeast infection and trauma complications from repeated pokes in the belly.  He was 71.
Doughboy was buried in a lightly greased coffin.  Dozens of celebrities turned out to pay their respects, including Mrs. Butterworth, Hungry Jack, the California Raisins, Betty Crocker, the Hostess Twinkies and Captain Crunch. The grave site was piled high with flours.
Aunt Jemima delivered the eulogy and lovingly described Doughboy as a man who never knew how much he was kneaded.  Doughboy rose quickly in show business, but his later life was filled with turnovers.  He was considered a very smart cookie, but wasted much of his dough on half-baked schemes.  Despite being a little flaky at times, he was still a crusty old man and was considered a positive roll model for millions.
Doughboy is survived by his wife Play Dough, three children:  John Dough, Jane Dough and Dosey Dough, plus they had one in the oven.
He is also survived by his elderly father, Pop Tart.
The funeral was held at 3:50 for about 20 minutes.
Mon, 17 Aug 2009 15:28:56 -0700 Non Words http://jperlow.posterous.com/non-words-0 http://jperlow.posterous.com/non-words-0 I know a few other words that are not listed in the OED or Webster's. But the words I would use for someone that cc:s a list of 30-40 writers and journalists who have better things to do with their time then read your stupid missive is "ostentatious jackass".
It's a Note Pad about this subject I am attaching to this email. This may seem like an ugly truth to those that read this, but it's true and has to be corrected. This type of language is dumbing down the english language and this applies to all of the American people. Everyone needs to fix this in their writing, speech and singing and in the general media.
